PERSONALISED

We help you identify specific situations through scenarios that can raise cybersecurity issues for you.

PRACTICAL

When you participate in a face-to-face workshop, you will learn and practise skills to identify and prevent cybersecurity threats and gain confidence with them. The topics and discussions are applied to real life, and a tailored pre- and post-survey will guide you to test your knowledge and start enhancing your own safety in the digital world. After the workshop, continue your development with our online resources and instructional short videos.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The CyberSafe Seniors Program is tailored for senior participants who want to develop their knowledge and skills in using digital devices or online applications safely. The program aims to empower seniors to protect themselves from cybercrime and scams by equipping them with essential proactive skills.

ICMS’s CyberSafe Seniors Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affair’s Cyber Security Awareness Support for Vulnerable Groups Grant Program (2024–2026).

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

On completion of the CyberSafe Seniors Program you will be able to:

  • Identify common cyber security threats that specifically target seniors.
  • Recognise warning signs of fraudulent activities in emails, phone calls, and online platforms.
  • Apply preventive strategies to protect personal information and digital accounts.
  • Build confidence in questioning suspicious requests and reporting scams to appropriate authorities.

MEET THE PROJECT TEAM

Associate Professor Betul Sekendiz

Associate Professor Betul Sekendiz is a leading expert in risk management and work health and safety, with a focus on enhancing public health and safety outcomes through evidence-based practices and policy development. As Associate Dean (Scholarship) at the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), she leads the CyberSafe Seniors Program with a focus on ethical safeguards and practical risk mitigation strategies for older Australians navigating the digital world. Associate Professor Sekendiz is the author of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Guide for Exercise and Active Health Businesses published by AUSactive, which includes pioneering strategies for managing cyber security risks in digitally connected service environments. Her work bridges academic research and real-world application, ensuring the CyberSafe Seniors Program is grounded in evidence-based practices that promote safety, resilience, and digital confidence among senior community members.

Dr Patrick Shearman

Dr Patrick Shearman is a senior academic and digital transformation expert with over 30 years’ experience in IT and cybersecurity. His research focuses on improving digital inclusion and wellbeing in the aged care and disability sectors. He supervises postgraduate research in this field and consults on curriculum design for higher education providers. Dr Shearman’s dual focus on industry and education supports the practical appropriateness of the CyberSafe Seniors Program.

Connor Barkley

Mr Connor Barkley is a lecturer and emerging neurotechnology researcher currently completing a PhD in Computer Science and Neuroscience. His research focuses on brain dynamics and speech processing, aiming to better understand how the brain encodes and responds to spoken language. Connor leverages his experience in education and research settings for engaging participant workshops and evidence-based outcomes for the CyberSafe Seniors Program.
